Visionary Peacemaking

For many of my clients and friends, I know this summer has been a time of healing family ties, sharing generously of ourselves, as well as relaxing and connecting more deeply with nature. Unfortunately, July has also been marked for our family by the bombing of the government buildings and the massacre of teenagers in Oslo, Norway on July 22. As many of you might be aware of, we do have many family and friends in Norway, some of who normally work in the affected areas of downtown Oslo.

Luckily, all of them are fine, although everyone is shaken and grieving over these tragic events.

Yet, like many I find myself heartened by the calm, peaceful response of the Norwegian government. My life has given me a strong belief in the possibility that even the most overwhelming tragedies can be the impetus for positive change. Breakdown can look like chaos for a time, but chaos is the moment when much is possible as we begin to create anew. Breakdown can lead to breakthrough as we work for & embrace a new vision of a global society characterized by equity, sustainability and a profound appreciation of our diversity with a deep commitment to peace.

For as Eleanor Roosevelt noted, “It isn’t enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn’t enough to believe in it. One must work at it.”

Thus, we are reminded that Peace is not a static state, but rather a dynamic process whereby we move gradually from understanding our differences and experiences, to tolerance of diverse opinions, finally arriving at a celebration of our diversity. It is my hope that this month’s tragedy can inspire us to be engaged and actively work for inspiring a positive vision of the future as we transition through these years of unprecedented change and much uncertainty. We can be paralyzed by our fear of the unknown or we can calmly go forth and work at creating a better world.

Let us open our hearts to opportunities where they arise and gently let go of the past to create room in our lives for blessings of patience & abundance; embracing beauty and poetry in your life whether it be with heart-warming shared experiences, spiritual awakenings or new challenges at work that bring increased financial security and ease.

A special thanks to those of you who have sent condolences and helped me in my own personal processing of grief to seeing hope and peace.
